Getting Started on iHigh

So you've signed up, registered, logged in, and you want to know what's next? The short answer is: plenty. The first thing you should do is spruce up your site. The system is designed to be flexible, so you can design your site to look however you want it to look, with whatever kind of content that you want to put up there. Here's how to get started:

1. The first step is to enter the page editor mode. If you aren't already at your profile page you can get there by simply clicking My: Site up in the top toolbar. Now, in that same toolbar, click the button on the far right labeled "Edit Page Layout." This will reload the page in edit mode. Only you can edit your own site.

2. Next you should probably clean it up a little. See all those empty blocks? Those are examples of the kinds of content you can put on your page. You can either fill those up with your own content or, if you prefer, throw them away. If you don't have any video to upload right now, go ahead and get rid of that block by clicking on the Remove option at the top-right of the element editing toolbar. And that block, along with Tim's incredible place-holding video, is gone.

3. Don't worry, if you decide you wanted to put video up there after all you can always add another. Make sure you are in Page Editor mode (if the Editing toolbars are visible above each block, you are in Edit mode) and try to create a new block. Adding a new block is as simple as picking the column in which you want to place it, scrolling to the bottom, and clicking on the button that says "Add a New Element a New Element Here" (element is the technical term for all those blocks). When you click on that button a blank element will appear in that column. Now you can give the block a title, size, and tell the system what kind of block you want it to be. For now, give it a title and leave the other settings the same. Click the button labeled Create Element to finalize your settings.

4. Now that you've got a new block you can do all sorts of things with it. If you decide that you don't like the title you gave it, click on the “Title” button (in the toolbar at the top of the block you want to change). To change what type of block it is click “Type.” This will bring up a list full of options. [[Click here for a full list of these Element Types.]] For now, let's make it a video block again. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and click on Video Player.

5. Congratulations! When the page reloads your block will have been changed to a video player. The video player needs a big block size, so it is recommended that you keep the size of the box set to 0,1, 105, 1_95, or 2. Each column is as wide as the widest block that it contains. So, even if all the blocks are small, if one of those blocks is a video the video will overflow and the width of the entire column will change to hold it. The easiest way to see what I'm talking about is to experiment. The best thing about this new page editor is that it makes it really easy to play around. Make a few blocks and mess around with them. Change the sizes, change the type, move them up and down, move them between columns... there's a lot you can do.
